Providence Health & Services Chief Executive, Providence Milwaukie Hospital in Milwaukie, Oregon
The Chief Executive (CE) will be a well-respected, experienced healthcare executive who is committed to advancing the Providence Milwaukie Hospital (PMH) ministry. The CE will ensure continued growth, innovation, and delivery of exceptional care. Working collaboratively with the community ministry board, foundation board, medical staff and executive management team, the incumbent will articulate a strategic vision that differentiates PMH in a competitive and changing marketplace. They will be accountable for continued organizational growth, operating results, quality and advocacy for patients, families, physicians, and employees. The leader will promote a culture in line with Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s mission, vision, and values. The CE will exhibit servant leadership and compassion for the workforce. They will work to strengthen physician engagement and to promote effective board, employee, and community relations. The incumbent will provide leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality, patient-centered, cost-effective healthcare consistent with the organizational mission, vision, and goals, and in accordance with the healthcare needs of the communities served. In addition to this position’s primary focus as the CE of PMH, this individual will be a senior leader within the larger Providence and an integral member of the Regional Leadership team.
The CE serves as primary executive liaison for The Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies and has primary accountability for accreditation standards for the organization. This person will ultimately maintain the overall operational and financial integrity of the organization through oversight of the day-to-day operations. In this capacity, the CE carries responsibility for integrating PMH operations with the overall Oregon Region and Health System strategic direction.
The following comprise the major expectations of the person who accepts the PMH CE position:
Maintain strong employee engagement.
Develop and articulate a physician alignment strategy to successfully engage medical staff and community physicians. Foster a culture of trust and partnership with physicians. Engage with physicians in strategic development and ensure that their practice flow is flexible and efficient to improve their work experience. Strengthen and maintain successful trusting relationships with key service area physician leaders.
Build relationships and become actively involved in Milwaukie and the communities served by PMH.
Optimize clinical excellence and performance in quality, patient safety and patient experience outcomes; raise PMH’s clinical profile.
Supports the optimization of strategic Clinical Institutes across the Service Area in collaboration with local and regional partners.
Develop a strong governance/advisory council for, involving physicians and other key stakeholders in strategic initiatives. Form a robust leadership structure that encourages collaboration and eliminates silos.
Assess and develop a cohesive relationship with PMH’s executive management team. Create a stable, longer-tenured, high performance group of leaders.
Be a visible leader who engages employees across the organization and promotes a supportive culture built upon trust; focus on workforce development initiatives.
Identify and develop strategies to strengthen financial performance to achieve growth projections.
Launch initiative to promote PMH’s brand in the community as the destination hospital in the region.
Identify and develop growth strategies to expand PMH’s geographic services beyond its traditional market boundaries.
Assess the current service offerings and identify opportunities to grow the outpatient arena.
Support system integration efforts across Southern California ministries.

The Chief Executive will:
Serve as a member of multiple regional councils working cooperatively with team members on the development, implementation and evaluation of the integrated delivery system in the Oregon Region.
Provide leadership to the organization to maximize quality, cost effectiveness, and responsiveness.
Selects and develops executive managers and department leaders who will meet the organization's goals and objectives.
Maintain high employee morale and positive relationships with employees in a manner that results in high employee satisfaction. Support and develop management team to build a high performing and productive team.
Provide leadership to the patient experience across the continuum of care. Motivate the management team and workforce to deliver a high level of care achieving quality outcomes and excellence in patient care.
Build and maintain strong and positive relationships with Medical Staff, for both the Medical Center and Clinical programs, to integrate physicians into decision-making processes and to ensure that physician needs are heard and addressed.
Operate the organization to ensure its financial strength, reviewing results on an on-going basis and taking corrective action to achieve the annual budget.
Participate in the Oregon Region strategic planning and budgeting processes and develop and implement action plans to ensure Providence Milwaukie Hospital achieves its annual objectives. This leader is accountable for achieving organizational success indicators and objectives, consistent with the strategies of the System and Region.
Provide leadership and work collaboratively with managers and staff to evaluate new opportunities. Develop programs and services that improve the organization's market position and address community needs.
Lead quality improvement initiatives, utilizing appropriate tools and resources such as Lean and change management techniques to insure the organization is in continuous improvement model to achieve better delivery of services.
Implement high standards of service for care, oversee system for monitoring quality, intervening as appropriate to take corrective action and ensure accreditation and regulatory guidelines are met.
Collaborate with colleagues and team members in providing strategic recommendations and advice. Works collaboratively with others to eliminate unnecessary organizational redundancy and duplication and to better meet the needs of the community for quality, affordable health care.
Represent Providence Milwaukie Hospital and the communities served in an appropriate manner. Demonstrates positive interactions with the public, and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with all employees, supervisors, and other department employees to maximize productivity, quality of work life and commitment to diversity.
Provide leadership in integration interests of physicians, physician organizations, other health systems, health plans, Hospital and shared services employees that provides an effective and efficient continuum of services to members and patients.
Provide leadership and/or directs affiliations with other health systems in Providence Health & Services.
Required qualifications for this position include:
A Master’s Degree in Health or Hospital Administration, Business Administration or a related field is preferred.
At least six years of senior level leadership experience in a health care delivery organization. The Chief Executive should have personal values compatible with those of Providence Health & Services and be comfortable leading and administering a Catholic sponsored organization as a healing ministry.
